Last month we began a look at how one can choose joy. Looking at Philippians 4, we discussed the first two components of choosing joy: fellowship with believers and worship.
Continuing, lets look at Php 4:5: Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. (New Living Translation) When I think of being considerate, I think of putting others before myself; considering what is best for the other guy. This is part of the Greek word, agape, often translated love. The KJV translates it charity. The idea is a caring for others at all costs. God demonstrated this kind of love when he sent his Son to this earth. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (Jn. 3:16) This familiar verse illustrates selfless love, charity, consideration. God the Father was willing to give His own Son, His flesh and blood...for me... for you. This thought overwhelms me. I cannot image giving up my cat for anyone, much less a child. That is the kind of love that we are called to live by.
In Marks Gospel, one of the teachers asked Jesus which law is the most important: The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. (Mk. 12:29-31) First, we are to love God, then ourselves, and then our neighbor as ourselves. Unfortunately some of us neglect the implied command: loving ourselves, but how can we love our neighbors as ourselves, if we do not love or care for ourselves. You were made by God, and he does not make mistakes. He sent his Son to die in your place. You are worthwhile! This is not a conceded love, but a care of self. How do I care for myself? First, I recognize that I am worthwhile, worthy of love. Next I take time for those things that I need to do that feel my cup. Many of these things are quite simple: eat right, sleep, exercise, take time for fun, take time for positive relationships, like we talked about last month. Most important, I take care of myself by loving God, and I show my love for God by obeying his commandments (Jn. 14:21).
What has He laid upon your heart? Who does He constantly place on your mind? What does that person need? Do it!! Care for each other! Through caring for others you will find joy.
