The position of “deacon” within the church is one of service. This distinction is seen in the Greek word diakonos which can be translated as “minister” or “servant.” The New Testament uses this same word in a general sense to describe Christians as servants and also in a particular way as an officer set aside for service. Service is the call of one who becomes a deacon in the church.
The Deacon Ministry at First Baptist Cary is divided into 3 teams with each team focusing on one of three service areas: hospital & bereavement, inreach/outreach, and widows & widowers.
The responsibility of the Hospital & Bereavement Ministry Team is to help visit all ill church members in the area hospitals, homes, and nursing homes. They also visit bereaved families and try to be available for help and consolation. This ministry supplements, not replaces, the ministry of our pastor and staff.
The responsibility of the Inreach/Outreach Ministry Team is to aid in meeting special needs of church and Sunday School members, and to reach the lost. These needs may be spiritual, emotional, financial, familial, etc. The goal is to assure that First Baptist Cary is a “caring place” by leading the church to “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2), and to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). Members of this team make welcome calls to church and Sunday School visitors and refer prospects to the Sunday School for follow-up visits. This ministry assists and supplements the Sunday School care group leaders.
The responsibility of the Widow & Widowers Ministry Team is to help meet the practical and spiritual needs of our member widows and widowers. Team members rotate weekly as the “on-call” person for the church office to contact when such needs arise.
New members of the church are assigned to a Deacon to help them assimilate into the programs and ministries of the church and to use their God-given gifts and abilities for service in the church.
Church members wishing to speak with a Deacon about any church matter may do so by contacting any of the Deacon Officers, or any Deacon.
